Spaniards favor foods whose qualities make them the most effective natural medicine and perfect ally of health

The “super foods”, products with superior nutritional properties, such as Virgin Olive Oil or legumes, have become the preferred choice of consumers when making the purchase. This is clear from Nielsen’s latest report “Consumer Confidence Q2 2016”, which ensures that Spaniards bought 4.1% more “superfoods” in the last six months.
The document places health as the third issue that most concerns society, only behind economy and employment. This trend has caused that health is precisely one of the main demands of Spaniards as consumers. “The priority for Spaniards is to be healthy and in shape,” says Gustavo Nuñez, CEO of Nielsen Spain and Portugal.
That is why the so-called “super shopping basket”, which includes 25 “super foods”, has increased by 4.1% in recent months compared to 1.9% of the total market. In the case of virgin olive oil (EVOO) growth has been especially notable: 4% in the period from October 2016 to March 2017.
The list of the 25 categories is completed: chia, quinoa (4 subcategories), chickpeas, beans, lentils, arándonos, nuts, salmon (3 subcategories), tuna, bonito, sardines and anchovies (2 subcategories), trout (2 subcategories) ), soy, cauliflower / broccoli and tomato.
